| In the last decade, the great development of the strategic alliances in the international container liner shipping has a deep and extensive impact on shipping market. The author in this thesis is to utilize Modem Industrial Organization Theory to study the conduct, performance and market structure of shipping alliances, together with their relationships. Also the author will analyze the development trend of the shipping alliances and their impact on international shipping industry with its specific characteristics, and then put forward some proposals for the development of our country's liner shipping industry.At first in chapter one, the author makes a clear definition to shipping alliance in the thesis. Afterwards the author analyzes how and why the shipping alliances appear and evolve, as well as why their members are uncertain. In addition, the author introduces the method of industrial organization as a whole, for further study.The game theory is the latest achievement in microeconomics, and one of the important research approaches of the modern industrial organization theory. In chapter two the author applies the cooperative game theory to analyze the shipping alliance, the conduct of liner shipping company, in the potential motive of it and its members' optimization economic behavior.In chapter three, according to the main variables about market structure, namely, market concentration, entry and exit barriers, product differentiation, the author analyze in detail how the shipping alliances influence the market of structure of international container liner shipping industry comprehensively with qualitative and quantitative methods.Economic outcomes are the final objectives of a shipping company, and fundamentally force the shipping alliances to come out and develop. In chapter four, with some liner companies' actual rates of return on capital recently the author firstly consider the financial performance of shipping alliances by horizontal and vertical comparison across them. Then the author discuss how the members of shipping alliances can obtain these results from some different aspects such as economics of scale and economics of scope.Finally the author explores the development trend of the shipping alliances in depth under the antitrust measures of the countries all over the world. And because the appearance of shipping alliance have already changed the original international competition pattern and game rule, the author in chapter five also looks into the shipping alliances' influence on international container liner shipping industry. Meanwhile, the author put forward some proposals for our country's development in future.In general, after the above analyses the author believes that the liner company in the shipping alliance can actually improve its financial performance and the shipping alliances will develop further. At the same time, the development of the shipping alliances has promoted the market shares to concentrate on a few large liner companies, which will put the whole international container liner shipping industry to a relatively stable situation. |
