So far, there have been three large-scale nongovernmental movements initiated by Chinese people in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao, Chinese mainland and other countries in the world for defending Diaoyu Island and its affiliated islands. The first movement began in the 1970s when the American government gave the administration power over Diaoyu Island and its affiliated islands to Japan without Chinese government's permission. The second movement broke out in the 1990s, and it was a protest against the offensive act of the Japanese Youth League, a civilian right-wing organization in Japan, who illegally set their feet on Diaoyu Island. At the beginning of this century, the Japanese government tightly collaborated with the civilian groups and took continuous measures to intensify its control over Diaoyu Island and its affiliated islands. The initiation of the third defending movement made a forceful counterpunch to the Japanese evil intention of trenching on these islands. The thesis is composed of five parts. The first part is the preface. In this part the author briefly introduces the studies on Diaoyu island event and Chinese civilian movements for defending Diaoyu Island and its attached islands in China, Japan and Taiwan. On the basis of a general introduction of the three movements, the author pointes out his main viewpoints, the significance of his study, and the research methods of the thesis. In the second part, the author explains the origin of the Diaoyu Island issue and its actuality. It also argues that Diaoyu Island and its affiliated islands are Chinese inherent territory and thus should be administrated by Chinese government according to the geographical configuration, historical literature (in China, Japan and Ryukyu) and the international law.The third part is a historical review of the three movements mentioned in the first paragraph. The fourth part further analyzes the complicated international factors in the Diaoyu Island issue and the historical significance of the three defending movements. Moreover, the author makes bold assumptions about the development of this event and also advances some suggestions on how to solve this problem. The fifth part is the conclusion.
