Research and survey results obtained both in China and abroad show that the disparity between the rich and the poor in China has become an increasingly serious problem for its expansion, stratification, relativity to particular groups, polarization and politicization. It is detrimental to concordant economic development, equal political participation, cultural integrity, harmonious social psyche and stable social order. It is therefore of great theoretical value and realistic significance to recognize the present condition of the problem, to reason out its contributing factors so as to work out countermeasures to the problem.Since its reform and opening to the outside world, China has stepped into a period of social transformation characterized by deconstruction and reformation of social structure. The disparity between the rich and poor has thus appeared, expanded and intensified along with the initiation, rapid development and shock of social transformation. On one hand, social transformation has procured the appearance of the disparity between the rich and the poor; on the other hand, the intensification of the disparity between the rich and the poor can affect the progression of social transformation. To analyze the contributing factors of the disparity between the rich and the poor in terms of social transformation is to study the problem through a crucial perspective of research. Major issues include economic factors such as ownership, distribution system, economic system and economic structure, and social factors like politics, culture, education and stratification. The disparity between the rich and the poor in China is a problem that has occurred in the process of development, a problem which is by no means contingent but inevitable in the course of social transformation. However, the problem itself does not necessarily mean polarization between the rich and the poor; nor does its expansion mean dismantled society. Since the problem has occurred alongside social development, it should be solved right in the process. Nevertheless, social development has never automatically solved any such problems; we have to take some measures in order to fulfill our goals. How to achieve "ample flow of social wealth" and how to realize "fair distribution of social wealth" have become two pivotal questions in bringing the problem under control. It is therefore essential to deepen the reforms in different fields, to rectify the modern social structure and to construct a sound social system so as to achieve sustainable economic growth and ample flow of social wealth, to maintain social stability, to realize essential social equality, to promote all-round development of the society and to achieve common prosperity.
