Xiaolangdi Multiple Purpose Dam Project (XMPDP) was one of the most important projects and was fund by World Bank. The total investment was 34.7-billion. As required by World Bank, Contract management in international engineering projects must choose an appropriate contract formwork which is suitable to the construction of the project, and based on such formwork, particular clauses have to be developed and detailed, and all these specifications and regulations have to be implemented during the construction of the project. In comparison with traditional domestic engineering project contract management, due to the differences between different parties involved in the construction of the projects, such as differences in culture and background, contract management in international projects has showed its even more systematism and complexity . This thesis introduces the contract management system and its implementation at XMPDP, in particular the organizational structure of contract management, the implementation and the settlement of contract events within the international lots under FIDIC contract formwork. Based on the introduction to some particular cases, the experience and lessons of the contract management at XMPDP have been discussed and analyzed.It generalized the success and fault aspect in this thesis. The success aspect includes variations solving, claims solving, document management, choosing sub-contractor etc. The fault aspect includes not enough works in the risk management.The two most important aspects in Employer's contract management in international projects are contract itself and the means of dealing with particular contract events. This thesis, through analyzing cases of contract management at XMPDP, and by referring to the contract management practices and their results at other similar projects both international and domestic, and also looking at the particular characters of Chinese international engineering project management, has explored and discussed the ways of acquiring an appropriate and complete contract formwork in international project construction. Also, some of methods in principle of dealing with particular contract events have been suggested. All of these exploration, discussions and suggestions are hoped to be valuable to and will shine light on the completion and perfect of the contract management of Chinese international engineering project construction.
