International mediation, pushed forward by mediators, is a method of peacefully resolving conflicts and disputes in international society. Many conflicts and disputes in human history are resolved by mediation. Mediator plays a significant role in mediation and it is the pivot in some processes of this kind. Successful mediation is beneficial for reducing international conflicts and promoting disputes resolution. It is, however, still restricted by many factors, which give rise to some flaws and limitations in mediation.The Northern Ireland problem was historically a complicated issue, which gradually evolved into the Troubles at the end of 1960s. Several efforts had been made to realize peace but few made substantial progress. A favorable turn occurred after the America's engagement. Since President Clinton took power, the American government played an important role in Northern Ireland peace process. To date, Northern Ireland generally has been a peaceful region.The United States played the role of mediator in Northern Ireland peace process and the American mediation accelerated the realizing of peace in Northern Ireland. The experience drawn from America's engagement in international mediation could be of great referential value for China's engagement in international affairs.
