The youth of Mao Zedong was a very important period in his great life. In orderto find out the theories to save the nation and the people, he experienced a rough butsubstantial spiritual track, and chose Marxism in the end.This article first introduces in details Mao's growing environment and his studyexperience. His strong willpower and courage to challenge the authority founded hisuncompromising character. The particular culture in Hunan Province shaped his noblepatriotism. His bold assimilation of modern western political thoughts broadened hiseyereach, and paved the way to his latter acceptance to Marxism from the western.May 4 Movement and New Culture Movement accelerated the dramatic change in hismind and he turned from a common democrat into a drastic one. After that, he wasinfluenced by anarchism and Utopian socialism to some extent, and then, bycomparison and selection, embraced scientific socialism and became an undeviatingMarxist in the end.This article mainly explores Mao's spiritual track to Marxism and analyzes thehistorical elements, important characters and theoretical trends that influenced hisgrowing up. There is great theoretical and practical significance in extracting the deepmeaning of Mao's choice and establishment of political belief, which can help today'syoung people to set up right values and sound view of life.
