Langue and meaning is a pair of important categories inlearning history of China. The debate between them referred toancient scholars' controversy on the question that whether itcompiled with each other between language and mind, and it cameoriginally from the discussion on relationship between name anddenotation among scholars during the trend of thought oncorrecting names in pre-Qin, which was named debate betweenname and denotation. Scholars in pre-Qin, because of differentconcentration on the relationship between Langue and meaning, formed into two different main groups: one held the idea thatlangue can express meaning thoroughly, represented byConfucian; the other that langue cannot express meaningthoroughly, represented by Taoism. Confucianism emphasizedparticularly on relationship between Langue and meaning withinname and language; raoism, however, focused on relationshipbetween them beyond name and language.Ontologically, debate between langue and meaning prevailedin Wei and Jin Dynasty, when metaphysicians represented byWangbi succeeded to the achievements on discussion betweenlangue and meaning, and attempted to seek possibility fromrelationship between langue and meaning within name andlanguage to beyond them by means of combination bothConfucianism and Taoism, and put the discussion to climax.Successors also made many of their own understandings andevaluations, which can be said that discussion on debatebetween langue and meaning generally embodied different understandings on relationship between language and mind amongancient scholars in China.Because of the fact that debate between name and denotationcontains debate between langue and meaning, scholars inlatter-day started study mainly from the debate between nameand denotation in the trend of the Study of Coufucian Classics. In my opinion, the reason why debate between Langue andmeaning came from can be analyzed in amore original point. Thatis the unique word-forming and word-using principle of Chinesecharacter as well as the theories. Analysis mentioned above isthe core of the paper, which attempts to give a newunderstanding and annotation about debate between hangue andmeaning from pre-Qin to Wei and Jin Dynasty. The paper carriedthrough as follow:The first part focuses analysis on word-forming andword-using principle of Chinese character as well as itsevolutionary history, with the aim to seek different rolesbetween Chinese character and western word on language andmind. The second part deals with discussion on debate between nameand denotation among scholars in pre-Qin, and the connectionsbetween the debate and word-using characters during the timewhen ancient scholars were in.Next we will transmit our discussion to scholars' view onlangue and meaning in pre-Qin. First, confine the views fromtwo different concentrations that langue can express meaningthoroughly or langue cannot. Then find out their relation. The following part aims to analyze the influence onrelation between langue and meaning taken by changes of Chinese characters in Qin Dynasty and Study of Coufucian Classicsdevelopment. The last part will attach more importance on analyzinghistorical reasons about the two different main groups: theidea that langue can express meaning thoroughly and the opinionthat taking meaning and rejecting langue, and introduce processthat the opinion of taking meaning and rejecting languewas comeinto birth as well as its influence on learning developmentaftertime.
