Before the founding of the People's Republic of China, considering the diplomatic principle of Chinese Communist Party, governments gradually proceeded to close embassies and consulates in China and withdraw their consuls. In view of the conflict with CCP during the Civil War and try to reduce conflicts with the CCP,it is undoubtedly wise for the United States to leave early. In this process, the United Kingdom, which has a “Special Relationship” with the US,was responsible for protecting the “interests” of the US in China at the request of the US.Britain's attitude towards assuming responsibility for protections has always been to ensure that it did not endanger the relationship with the CCP,maintain a good relationship with the US and protect its own interests as much as possible. However, after the founding of the People's Republic of China, because the official identity of the British consuls has not been recognized by the CCP,it is difficult for the UK to take a powerful step when intervening in the problems between China and the US.In a word,Before and after the founding of the People's Republic of China,Britain's protections of American “interests” in China were superficially related to the “Special Relationship” between the UK and the US.In essence, the act of UK was based on its own interests. What the UK did in protections has maintained relations with the US,and has not hindered its own interests in China, which demonstrated the sophistication of British diplomacy.
