Roe v. Wade is one of the most important and influential Supreme Court decisions in the modern history of the United States. As the landmark ruling, the decision of Roe v. Wade split American society on abortion controversy in 1973. This thesis reviews the historical background and the origins of Roe v. Wade in the first chapter. This chapter introduces the brief history of abortion in the United States and then especially discusses the abortion reform in 1960s, the judicial system, and the breakthrough in judicial field. In the second chapter, the writer reconstructs the historical course of Roe v. Wade veritably from suing to ruling through the abundant sources and reveals some neglected historical facts in this case. Furthermore, the writer analyzes the judicial elements of Roe v. Wade and then deciphers the most controversial judicial opinions which are full of legal terms and complicated medical, philosophical and historical background knowledge. In the third chapter, depending on the development of abortion controversy in the United States nowadays, the writer discusses the impacts of Roe v. Wade on the women's rights, the judicial system and theory, the social reactions, and the domain of politics. Finally, the writer summarized the reflections and real meaning of Roe v. Wade as an important historical event in retrospect.
