Taking resistance of threats as its key function, traditional national security used to mean military security. It pays much attention to the integrity of national sovereignty and territory. "Hard power" such as military and economy is the primary means chosen to protect national security. However, with the change of international situation and the rapid development of information technology, non-traditional security appeared which has changed the traditional concept of national security with "soft power" playing a more and more important role now. Information as the core of "soft power" and information technology, an important part of "hard power" have become important factors in international politics while bringing unprecedented threats to national security.Starting from the new problems brought to national security by information technology, this thesis discusses the issues of "information power", "information territory", "information security" and "information sovereignty", and it points out that information and information technology, while getting more and more significant to national security, have changed the contents of international politics. The openness of information ushers in uncertain threats to national security and these threats are more unpredictable and diversified now which makes national security much vulnerable. After the introduction to the new problems and new characteristics brought to national security, this thesis focuses on the threats imposed on national security by information and information technology. Finally comes the opinion that security advantage depends on information advantage. It also provides suggestions on how to safeguard Chinese information security after an analysis of American information security policy.
