The new English curriculum standards (2011) proposed that the nature of English course is the unity of instrumental and humanities in compulsory education stage. In actual teaching, how to realize the unity of instrumental and humanities depends on the quality of Junior English teachers. At present we should focus on how to cultivate and improve the teachers’ reflection ability so that they could actively reflect on their previous teaching experience and educational philosophy.In the1980’s, worldwide researches and discussions related with teachers’ reflection show that reflection can promote teachers’ expertise, which has a great influence on China’s educational field. From then on, reflection has been a hot issue which is studied and advocated by researchers and educators. But the present circumstance of junior English teachers in China has been ignored, especially the teachers in the countryside. So in this paper I will explore the ways to cultivate the ability of teachers’ reflection through a case study.This study is a case study, based on existing literature and in-depth interviews with the rural school leader and first-line English teachers, which finds out the real teaching life and the status of reflective ability of junior high school English teacher. And the interviews concern about the concept of understanding, reflective consciousness, reflective habits, the content of reflection, reflection level, aspects of content of teachers’ ability to reflect. It analyzes the characteristics of the school English teachers’ the ability to reflect and the reasons for the current situation, including the external environmental factors and teachers’ factors. Based on the analysis and the analysis of the causes of rural middle school English teachers teaching the ability to reflect the status quo, this study is given on how to improve teachers’ability to reflect. Three recommendations for the English teacher training institutions, firstly they should pay attention to the penetration of reflective consciousness in the course; Secondly the combination of the form of training with the teachers’practice and thirdly the feedback of training teacher; from the aspect of the school, it should pay attention to the construction of the reflection system, play a leading role of leadership and English language teaching and research; And for English teachers should be noted that the enhancement of the sense of responsibility, accumulation and reflection methods and strategies for the rational use of the English educational theory.
