Collective Wedding during the period of the Republic of China is a new form ofwedding advocated by the government and rise in the background of the New LifeMovement. It is the further development on the basis of Civilized Marriage in the lateQing dynasty and early Republic of China. It is not only an important symbol of themarriage reform in modern China but also a typical case of the governmentsparticipation in social life.Although Collective Wedding from foreign countries and have a chance, but itsappearance is the result under the background of modern Chinese society west goeseast and drastic changes in society. In the process of the rise and development ofCollective Wedding, the government has played an important role. As a socialmanagement, the government plays the role of a advocate, demonstration and theorganization in the process of promoting transform social traditions. In April3,1935Shanghai Government held the first session of the New Life Collective Wedding inorder to promote transforming social traditions, reform the marriage customs,improve the social atmosphere. After that, Collective Wedding quickly became awedding fashion. In addition to the government agencies, various social groups,commercial service began to host it. It has a great significance for the reformextravagant wedding atmosphere of luxury at that time. At the same time, thegovernment through Collective Wedding to make the wedding in private colorevolved into a socialization of public activities and to strengthen the marriagemanagement, improve the governments prestige, advance the collectiveconsciousness of people, and promote the socialization of married life.Review the implementation effect, Collective Wedding is thriving, but as a whole,it was never able to completely replace the traditional wedding. This shows that thecustoms reform often needs a long-term process. Wedding as a part of customs alsohave strong inheritance. It can be seen that though customs reform is an inevitabletrend of social development, but the process that the new customs to replacetraditional customs is relatively long.
