In2002, the Third National Special Olympics Games were heldin Xi’an of Shaanxi Province. Basketball game was included in the competition eventsfor the first time. This session of the Special Olympics opened the first page of theChinese Special basketball project. And it also opened the prelude of the SpecialOlympics basketball sports in Chengdu. Intellectual disabilities participate in SpecialOlympics basketball which not only can show their sports talents, communicationskills, and it can enhance the friendship, but also can let the society to change theirattitude and increase mutual understanding.The development of the Special Olympics is very good in Chengdu. In manyprojects, Chengdu team did very well, even part of the projects are one of the best inthe country, such as roller skating, figure skating, football, and so on. Basketball is theonly development of the short board project in Chengdu Special Olympics. It alsodirectly affects the development of the entire Special Olympics movement inChengdu. At the same time, mentally retarded persons to participate in SpecialOlympics Basketball not only can improve sports skills, strengthen physique,cultivating sports interest, the development of intelligence and physical coordination,but also can reduce the mentally handicapped family burden, enhance theirself-confidence, to exercise their communication and collaboration skills, improvetheir social skills. So, it is necessary for us to find out the main factors restricting thedevelopment of Special Olympics Basketball, combined with the actual situation,formulate feasible development paths, the effective development of Chengdu City, soas to promote the development of Special Olympics Basketball and the SpecialOlympics movement.The main contents of this paper are as follows:1、There are too many mentally disabled people in Chengdu, but only a fewschools have the special education, especially the special society-adaptation schoolsmore less. It makes the mentally disabled children has little chance to receiveeducation.2、The special education teachers in Chengdu, age structure is more reasonable.However, such as the title structure, educational level, professional structure, trainingsituation is not ideal, need to be further improved.3、The Sports equipment in Chengdu special education schools is not up to thenational standards. Lack of funds for Special Olympics Basketball makes mostschools can’t carry out Special Olympics Basketball activities. 4、The parents of the mentally disabled children generally have a lowdegree.So it isdifficult to understand the special basketball game knowledge, and obtain the knowledge about the Special Olympics basketball is relatively single.5、Community who carry out the Special Olympics basketball situation is bad.Most part of Chengdu communities have never held the Special Olympics basketballgame.
