In the interpersonal communication of Chinese, courtesy demands reciprocity. Gifts have avariety of functions in people’s daily life. People change gifts to keep in touch, communicatefeelings, enhance friendship. Influenced by Chinese traditional culture of “courtesy”, givingbehavior also has an important influence on the development of the romantic relationship, andthe type of giving behavior has its own characteristics and is different from other kinds ofinterpersonal gift exchange meaning.The study adopted the enumeration method and qualitative research methods to investigatethe characteristics of the gift behavior among college students to understand China’s uniquemeaning of the gift giving behavior among college students and the impact on couples’communication, so as to understand college students in love better.Study1: The research based on the theory of Rosch, the theory of prototype, and adoptedthe enumeration method to collect the typical exchanging gifts between college couples and themeaning. We collect220effective questionnaires. The results showed that:(1) The typical giftsexchange between college couples’ have chocolate, scarf, and ring.(2) The present main expressthe meaning of love, commitment, care.(3)There is distinct gender, different love experience onthe number of listed gift and the meaning.(4)In the present significance of frequency on the list,people who has two love experience listed the most number, but people who has loved four timesgive the minimum number.(5)Based on the theory of Sternberg the gifts that love couples givewere divided into three types. Express the gift of intimacy, commitment, express passion of gifts.Study2: This research is mainly based on the Sternberg’s theory of love and the results ofthe first study. We compiled a questionnaire related to the preference of couples behavior ofgiving gifts for the partner, participants need to give their answer for the questionnaire andSternberg love scale according to their own love condition. The aim is to learn how couplesexchange different types influence the love between them. The results showed that:(1) Giftsexchange between lovers and couples love three components have significant correlation.(2)Anintimacy gift, such as daily necessities of life, plush toys, accessories, books and other giftsbetween couples of intimacy component exists significant correlation, an uncommitted gift suchas cup (life), rings, watches, belts, scarves and other gifts between couples commitmentcomponent exists significant correlation.Study3:This study used explain phenomenological analysis (IPA) method of qualitativeresearch to understand the necessity for the gifts exchange between lovers and the mostsatisfying type of gifts one received from companion. The results show that:(1) Gifts betweenlovers is very necessary.(2) The function of gifts between lovers is mainly to maintain feelings,to maintain fresh feelings, express love, represent real love.(3) There exist gender differences between the couple that the features of most satisfying gifts. Boys received the most satisfyinggift: reflecting girls’ carefulness and concerned about him, practical, necessary. Girls receivedthe most satisfying gift: romantic, commitment, payment by himself, reflecting girl has aimportant part in boy’s heart. Male and female received the most satisfying common features are:surprised, initially received several gifts.In all, three studies of this thesis are done in the aspect of psychology. The aims of this studyhas the following meaning: Firstly, this thesis makes people gain a better understanding of giftgiving the importance of psychology perspective of gifts between lovers, thereby contributing tofurther understand and explore the characteristics of the behavior of college students love.Secondly, it will help to understand the traditional Confucian ritual lovers romantic behavior andcharacteristics of the culture.
