Home economics education, an important part of women’s education in Chinese traditional education, has its deep historical roots. However, as a scientific curriculum system in modern colleges and universities in China,it originated in the U.S.. It was introduced to China during the process of the eastward spread of Western Culture and became an characteristic education possessed by a few universities after absorption and creation.Home economics education implemented in colleges and universities in China takes Home economics department as the main carrier with the aim of fostering housekeeping personnels.In the first half of the20th century, Housekeeping department established in Beijing Female Higher Normal College in1919,it marked Home economics education opened in colleges and universities.There were14colleges and universities implementing home economics education in33years later.With the clue of time, the dissertation, consisted of Bright Line and Dark Line and carried out in accordance with the thread of historical development, expounds in detail the course of Home economics education from vigorousness to comedown in the interweaving of the Bright Line and Dark Line.The bright line is three historical stages of the development of home economics education in colleges and universities, specifically describe the establishment of housekeeping department in colleges and universities as well as the concrete practice of the home economics education activities.The dark line is the national education idea behind home economics education in colleges and universities development, specifically,it is the education policy of "the center from home to country" advocated by the government of the republic of China and "the center from country to home"in new China period.The dissertation concludes four parts and detailed describes the historical route of "Start-development-decline" of the home economics education in colleges and universities in China:the study stage in the early period of the republic of China, the climax stage in the period of the Anti-Japanese War period, the fission stage in the period of the late republic of China as well as colleges and universities faculty adjustment stage in new China period. In decades of home economics education in colleges and universities existing, home economics education not only creat a new field of education in colleges and universities, but also has created a new way for women’s higher education. By studying the American model,scientific and normalized home economics course system began to take shape in Chinese colleges and universities. However, in the middle of the20th century, home economics education came to a grinding halt. There are several historically inevitable factors accounting for it:such as government’s leading role in education, the unstable factors within home economics discipline, unharmonious learning and transplant, etc.
