Textbook is the basic foundation and materials in teachers’ and students’ activities. In the stage of compulsory education, as the main foreign language course, English textbook is the key content of teachers’ teaching and students’ learning. Whether English textbook can meet the need of them or not, it is need to be solved in English teaching.Therefore, the author attempts to investigate the applicability of Guangzhou new primary school English textbook, and tries to provide some corresponding suggestions.This study uses several research methods,such as, literature method, text analysis, questionnaire.On the basis of relevant theoretical research, survey on Guangzhou new English textbook from the target of applicability, the content of applicability and the teaching of applicability, and found that the new primary school English textbook generally meet the need in teachers’ teaching and students’ learning. On the target applicability, the goal is consistent with the course objectives.In terms of the content of the textbook applicability, the choice of material is diversification and related to the students’ real life, but the content lacks of times epoch topic.On the teaching applicability, its general layout is reasonable and items are clear, but the relation of each content is unclear and activities are single. So some related suggestions would be put forward. Firstly, to strengthen the content and improve the science layout; secondly, change the view of textbook and improve the teachers’ quality, and promote the ability of use flexible teaching methods; thirdly, to guide the students to master some relevant learning strategy, so as to make full use of textbook.The lack of research results in the applicability evaluation of English textbook, together with the time and ability limitation, the aspect of theoretical analysis and the selection of respondents is so not comprehensive which leads to certain limitation in the dissertation.
