Nowadays, there are four sets of English textbooks for the learners in the junior middle school available in Beijing. They are Go for it, New Standard English, Junior High English and English. The first three sets are widely used, which all adopts the task-based approach within the framework of communicative language teaching and learner-centered themes. Relative research on these three sets of textbooks is scarce and needs to be done.There are six chapters in this thesis. Chapter 1 briefly describes the current curriculum reform in basic education and the significance of the present study. Chapter Two gives an overview of the syllabus, textbooks, textbook design and compilation, and textbook evaluation. Chapter Three involves the research design on the analysis of textbooks. Chapter Four is concerned with the results and findings of the three sets of textbooks, and composes textbook evaluation together with analysis. Chapter Five is about the analysis of data collected from the study. Chapter Six concludes the whole thesis. It gives a summary and puts forward some pedagogical implications and suggestions for teachers.I hope this thesis will help in the evaluation of textbooks. I also hope this will aid textbook using.
