Communicative approach has achieved unprecedented interest and prominence in foreign language teaching in China since 1980. Role play, as a branch of communicative approach, was noted by its efficient in cultivating students’expressive ability. However, from a wide view of English compulsory course in China, role play is compel against the academic pressure. Therefore, It will be a positive significance to discuss the application of role play in primary school in order to create an environment of language learning and improve the students’English oral level.As a kind of teaching method, role play is an effective way to develop students’language skill. Situated Cognition、Social learning、Cooperative learning、Constructivism learning provides role play a solid theoretical foundation.At first, According to the existing problems by using role play in the primary school, this paper makes further studies by document research, such as the current domestic and foreign theories about the role play teaching design which provides a solid foundation.Secondly, this article collect relevant books, journals and papers about role play, induces and summarizes the primary school English the concept, characteristics and significance of role play. This research adopts the way of action research, conducted a random questionnaire in two primary schools in Nanjing and Yangzhou city, By analyzing the questionnaire, interview of teachers and students, students learning feedback sheet, The relevant strategy appeared problems in current primary school English:school examination pressure, individual differences, the uneven quality of teachers.Then, According to the existing problems, this paper chooses two stories respectively from Story time part in Yilin primary school English teaching material to analyze the full control, half control two types of role-playing, according to the teaching design, This essay choose Our new home to teach in order to verify the half control style role play. Finally, the paper state the effect of role-playing in primary English teaching, put forward relevant Suggestions, and affirmed that role play is a kind of effective teaching methods and strategies.
