In the fierce competition of current society, having a good command of English gradually becomes one of the requirements, or becomes a necessary qualification that people should possess. In this situation, people’s desire to enhance the ability of using English are strong, and they want to improve their status. So English is an important communicative tool in this competition. As a result, the communicative ability of English gets more and more attention. The traditional class aims at enabling students to master the basic knowledge to pass the exam; this method is no doubt out of date.In order to explore the appropriate English teaching pedagogy that suits China’s education and improves the teaching quality, the educational departments have undertaken amounts of researches; teacher were trained regularly and asked to design teaching plans together, and also discussed their learning result; thus they summarized the good teaching experience and spread them, with some effective pedagogy having entered in the field of English education. Among them, communicative language teaching has received a lot of attention from scholars and educators; communicative language teaching encourages students to communicate with others with English and solve the problems in the real life. Role-play as one teaching method of communicative language teaching is popular among students and teachers. It creates a particular situation and roles for students to experience the interaction with others and improve their oral English.The study aims at analyzing junior high school students’ performance during the role-play by classroom observation and case study, and also tries to discuss what influence role-play brings to their oral English learning. Questionnaire and interview were designed to present the advantages and disadvantages of role play from the aspect of teachers and students, thus, the author could give some advice about how to apply role-play into oral English teaching in junior school more effectively, and improve the ability of students’ oral English, so they can meet the demands of modern education and society.
