After-class reading is an important approach to improving the efficiency of in-class reading, as well as a useful way to build up a healthy personality and broaden the students’ horizons. With the development of curriculum reform in senior high middle school, the functions, together with the significance of after-class reading have drawn the greatest attention of many teachers teaching Chinese in senior high middle schools. However, how to conduct a series of reading skills and how to accelerate students’ after-class reading still confuse teachers a lot. Taking Qiubei Middle School Attached to Yunnan Normal University for example, my paper focuses on searching effective methods to improve students’ after-class reading quality and increase the amount of students’ after-class reading by way of questionnaires and interviews.My paper consists of five chapters, the first one of which mainly talks about reasons for my choosing the theme of my paper and research done home and abroad.Chapter two states the significance of after-class reading for senior high school students from the perspective of quality-oriented education and exam-oriented education. The third chapter mainly discusses problems of students’ after-class reading in Qiubei Middle School Attached to Yunnan Normal University and causes of these problems. Chapter four, in addition, provides some solutions to such problems by uniting teachers, parents and students together, so as to increase students’ interest in after-class reading and students’ will as well. In the process of cooperation,teachers are responsible for reading skills’ guidance, parents for a comfortable reading environment, and students for their own improvements. The last chapter,chapter five, concentrates on case study in Qiubei Middle School Attached to Yunnan Normal University. The subjects of case study are senior high students who are left behind and senior high students who are minor nationalities. The purpose of case study is meant to put forward some strategies to improve the after-class reading abilities of the two types of senior high school students.
