Teacher is the most important resource and soul of higher education. A reasonable teacher structure is indispensable in the implementation of higher education. In this thesis, the conditions of current Chinese teachers in higher education are investigated by sampling, and huge amount of data is obtained. On the basis of statistics and analysis, the teachers are studied as a special group of persons with abilities, according to the fundamental theory of persons with abilities. The current conditions and problems of the higher education faculty are analyzed, and the running mechanism based on competition and the exchange of persons with abilities is put forward as a solution for the structural optimization of teacher group. Furthermore, the specific countermeasures for such optimization are also brought forward. The thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter 1 describes the importance of teachers and the teacher structure. The necessity for studying the structure of higher education faculty is demonstrated, in such a situation that the universities are recruiting more and more students and will compete internationally after China has entered the WTO. The existing studies of teacher structure in higher education and their insufficiencies are also depicted. Such insufficiencies include the ignorance of faculty's origin and the scale of full-time and part-time faculty. In this chapter, the main goal of this study is also declared.Chapter 2 expatiates on the main viewpoint that as a special group of persons with abilities, the structure of teaching faculty is very important to the implementation of higher education, according to the fundamental theory of persons with abilities. And a reasonable structure can help not only the functioning of the group, but also the optimization of the group. The intension of teacher structure as a dynamic balance is also pointed out.Chapter 3 contains the case studies of current teacher structure. The method used in the study and the statistics and analysis results are also introduced. Various teacher structures are studied, comparing with the teacher structures in developed countries. In this chapter, special emphasis is given on the seldom-studied faculty's origin and full-time and part-time faculty structure. The main problems with the current teacher structure are described, and the sticking point of relative enclosure in the teacher group is pointed out as well. Chapter 4 gives a solution to the enclosure of teacher group: establish an open teacher group on the basis of reasonable exchange and effective competition. The measures for optimizing the teacher structure are also given in this chapter.
