Urbanization is the main task we have to face in this century. To date, all difficulties in practice and all puzzles in theorical probe derive from unthorough knowledge about "nature of urbanization". To master the laws of China's urbanization, to make China's urbanization develop smoothly under all kinds of complicated surroundings, "nature of urbanization" should be re-known at first. Taking "why is urbanization possible "as motif, this dissertation makes some study on "what is urbanization "in the field of theory and "how to realize urbanization" in the field of practice.In the part of "preface", study background and study importance are stated, other study fruits are outlined, study hypotheses and methods are put forward.In the second part, based on existing study fruits,"nature of urbanization" is cleared. It points out that there are some defaults in the past urbanization knowledge, eg. non-natural viewpoint, non-comprehensive viewpoint and non-historic viewpoint. Thus we should re-acknowledge the nature of urbanization under the director of historical materialism and dialectical materialism. It makes out the new idea that urbanization is a social phenomenon about the interaction and inter-construction between the development of production forces and the satisfaction of needs of human being during the course of development of human society, which manifests the process of the transformation of human society from a traditional rural society style to a new society style in which country and town melt with each other, and that the nature of urbanization is to emancipate and develop productive force, to clear away the differences between town and country,to realize integration between town and country, and to meet human beings' needs. This kind of new knowledge shows fundamental traits of urbanization: objectivity; positivity; course; intergrowth. It makes it possible to comprehense"what is urbanization" from a new and higher perspective, it helps get rid of those misunderstandings about urbanization. It provides scientific standard and evidence for urbanization practice. In the third part, this dissertation touches on the fresh practice of China's urbanization. Concept of urbanization path is stated and concrete. Urbanization approaches are outlined in the way of population-factor, space-factor and industry-factor respectively. Firstly, with regard to population-factor, analysis of concrete path of China's urbanization is made in the angle of population-centered and population-controlled. Secondly, with regard to space-factor, analysis of concrete ways of China's urbanization is made on the levels of single-town, inter-town, between town and country. Thirdly, with regard to industry-factor, analysis of concrete paths of China's urbanization is made in the perspective of primary industry, secondary industry, tertiary industry and the relationships of them. Basic types and its fundamental characteristics are outlined; causes and problems are put out. At last, the dissertation clears that, generally speaking, the approaches of China's urbanization hold two basic traits: the major force of urbanization derives from government but the market force makes a more and more important role as time goes by; different approaches are taken in China's urbanization but there are some unharmonity among them. Factors that impact upon the path of urbanization are pointed out as well, namely, gifted resources, certain historic backgrounds, future challenges and urbanization thoughts. Suggestions are provided to a new urbanization type, which keeps the nature of urbanization.In the last part, main fruits of this dissertation are concluded that it advances the knowledge of nature of urbanization and puts forward the advice to take a new type of paths of China's urbanization. Shortcomings of the dissertation are pointed out and problems to which should be given attention are outlined.
