In recent years, with the development of foreign language teaching and testing, it has been found out that testing and teaching are two respects, which can complement each other. On one hand, language teaching needs necessary tests to assess. On the other hand, scientific tests can feedback fair and external information to language teaching. As one type of integrated subjects, cloze can train and examine students' comprehensive application ability of English effectively. So not only teachers but also students generally feel thorny in teaching and learning it. The aim of this paper is to start from theory and practice foundation, and try hard to probe into countermeasures of cloze of NMET and its impacts on English teaching as well.In this paper, we will try to prove that the holistic is the academic foundation of the cloze. The whole paper consists of five parts.In chapter one, the background, purposes and research methods of this paper are presented.In chapter two-the academic part, we will try to come to the conclusion that the integrative theory is the reason for the generation of cloze. In the beginning of this part, we will have a brief review of the history of language testing, which includes four periods: pre-scientific; psychometric-structuralist; integrative-sociolinguistics and communicative testing periods from the aspect of the language testing. The characteristics in the application for cloze test of each theory in each period are also evaluated and reviewed here.In chapter three-the practical part, we will analyze the characteristics of literature types and forms of this examination according to the current situation of the cloze in NMET and discuss its future trends based on the recent examines. We also point out the main problems during the course of examination connected with my students' performance in the examine of 2002. Besides, we will analyze the cohesion and coherence of the cloze test from the aspect of discourse.In chapter four, some useful methods, skills and mental measures in finishing the cloze examination are pointed out. And we also propose some useful teaching methods, teaching revelations and its future development according to the author's many years of teaching experiences in the first front.In chapter five, conclusions are drawn in the end.
