Pattern-modification problem teaching and learning methodology plays an important role in delivering fundamental knowledgebase and improving students' basic capabilities.However, in current public literature, there is little published study on pattern-modification by neither mathematic education theory professionals nor mathematics lecturers; even worse, certain unclearness and incorrectness regarding pattern-modification theory are being frequently encountered. To solve this dilemma, it is critical to research and study the pattern-modification methodology. This endeavor is beneficial on both theoretical and practical perspectives: first, a pattern-modification problem teaching and learning methodology theory with Chinese characteristics can be established, it is strictly based on the mathematics teaching and learning practices in China; second, the research and its results can be facilitated to guide our mathematics teaching and learning practices, to improve our classroom teaching efficiency.A certain number of existing studies focused on the definition of pattern-modification method, the theory foundations of pattern-modification problem, the construction of pattern-modification problems, and the functionalities of pattern-modification problems, etc. Although these studies are beneficial, many more aspects need to be improved, such as:1, The connotation of pattern-modification method was not clearly defined, suchthat the applicability of the method is negatively influenced; 2, The description of the construction of pattern-modification problems was notsystematic, such that the method cannot be efficiently manipulated; 3, The functionality study of the pattern-modification problems was prominently based on theory, lacking real world application examples based on high school classroom scenarios;4, The principles to be followed in the application of pattern-modification problems were not discussed in the open literature; we should not hope that pattern-modification method is omnipotent, to achieve a satisfying result fromthis method, certain principles must be studied and followed in the practices.Contributions and conclusions of this research:1, The connotations and characteristics of pattern-modification method were clearly defined and described based on previous studies;2, The connotations and characteristics of pattern-modification problem and its teaching were clearly defined and described based on previous studies, the classification of pattern-modification problems was given; 3, Based on the pattern-modification problems teaching and learning cases, six frequently used approaches to constructing pattern-modification problems were provided, six major functionalities of pattern-modification methodology were described as well; 4, The last section of this paper discussed three important principles to befollowed when applying pattern-modification problems teaching and learning method, they were situated in real world classroom scenarios.
