This thesis intends to explore a possible way to help the high school students in China to improve their English study by cultivating their English writing ability. On the basis of some English teaching theories, an experiment has been conducted to investigate what authentic picture is in Chinese EFL writing classroom. The purpose of the experiment is to study whether it is necessary to build up the students' English writing ability in the first year of senior study, and whether it is practical to improve the students' English study by means of practicing writing. As is known, listening, speaking, reading and writing are the four important language skills that the students should try to master when they study English. Among them, the first three have long been paid much attention to, while writing is sometimes neglected. As a matter of fact, writing practice is one of the important ways to enhance a person's qualities. As far as the students' psychological character is concerned, the writer thinks it instructive to carry out an English teaching experiment aimed at promoting the students' English learning by cultivating their English writing ability. The results of the experiment show that training the students' English writing ability is very important and useful for them to improve their general knowledge of English, and the students can achieve a lot in their English study more easily when their English writing skill is well cultivated. In the process of the experiment, the writer has analyzed the current situation of the teaching and learning of English writing in Chinese middle school, discussed whether it is necessary and practical to develop the students' English writing skill in their first year of senior study, and presented some possible ways to improve the students' English writing ability. Based on these findings, the thesis provides insight not only into English writing teaching, but also into future study in the relevant field.
