In the information society, learning is not only a person's essential preparatory stage before entering the working field, but a process of all the life; nowadays it is a theme for educating to learn to study. Self-Directed Study must be one of the main study forms of learners, it is not only a course that knowledge is mastered and accumulated, but also the course that a learning ability forms and develops. In modern distance education, teachers should change from teaching to direct instruction, including provide guidance of attaining learning resource, learning technique, learning content, and support and encouragement to learner's psychology, etc. By doing this, on one hand can help students to finish studying the task successfully, at the same time it is essential for training the ability to Self-Directed Study.This article analyses the factors that affect students' Self-Directed Study through many methods such as theoretical research and practice inquisition, and provided some recommendations from the perspective of direct instruction strategy, the article is divided into four parts. Part one introduces the research situation both at home and abroad, as well as it states the rationale for this study; Part two, Focus on the internal and external factors that affect the Self-Directed Study in modern Distance Education by the view of students and teachers; Part three, this article refines the learning strategies from the perspective of learning material and learning process by analyzing two concrete examples. Thus further explains the significance that teachers take effective strategy in direct instruction can facilitate the student accomplish his study and form the ability to Self-Directed Study. Finally, On the basis of investigation and research in the teaching practice, it is author's idea that teachers should take four strategies to help the learners to improve their Self-Directed Study ability, that includes pilot their learning objectives, instruct their learning techniques, tutor the learning key points, and counsel the learning problem. This four must be in conjunction with the students' needs.
