Writing in English is not only a language activity, but also an activity of thinking. The effects which the discrepancies of the oriental and occidental modes of thinking have on the senior middle school English writings can't be neglected. This paper first provides detailed coverage of the discrepancies of the oriental and occidental modes of thinking, and of the reasons which leads to these discrepancies. Then the author of this paper examines the reflections of the discrepancies on the English and Chinese languages from three aspects, that is , diction, syntax and discourse. Based on the analysis, it is hypothesized that these discrepancies and their reflections on the two languages may have a negative effect on the students' English writing. In order to testify the hypothesis above, students are asked to write a composition in English, so as to collect the errors caused by the negative effect of the oriental mode of thinking. On the basis of the analysis of the errors in the students' compositions, a conclusion can be drawn that the discrepancies of the oriental and occidental modes of thinking have a negative effect on the students' English writing from three aspects: diction, syntax and discourse. First, there are many lexical errors in the students' compositions and these errors can be categorized into four kinds, that is, misuse in the word speech, incorrect collocation, wrong word form in single or plural and misused word. Second, syntactical errors can be found in the students' compositions, too. Because of the negative effect of the oriental mode of thinking and the Chinese syntactical structure, there are nine kinds of chinglish sentences such as sentence fragment, run-on sentence, liandong sentence structure, lian-dong-jian-yu sentence structure and so on. These chinglish sentences hinder the students from expressing themselves correctly. Finally, the negative effect is on the discourse. The result of this research shows that there are mainly two types of text patterns in the students' composition, that is, the linear text pattern and the circular or spiral text pattern. The former is accepted by the English native speakers while the latter is not. And only 11.7% students follow the English text patterns. The rest organize their English compositions according to the Chinese text patterns.According to this research, we can conclude that there are quite a lot of errors in students' English compositions in diction, syntax and text patterns, which are closely related to the discrepancies of the oriental and occidental modes of thinking. So the author suggests that the training of the students' writing ability in English can not only be confined to the training of their writing ability in target language. The causes of the errors in diction, syntax and text structure in their compositions should also be analyzed at the angle of the discrepancies of the oriental and occidental modes of thinking in order to enhance their writing ability in English effectively. In a word, we can have a better understanding of the errors in the students' compositions through this research. And it also offers great help for our senior middle school English writing in the future.
