Language and modes of thinking are closely linked and interact with each other. As is known to all, different nations and regions have their own unique modes of thinking due to their different geographic, historical, economic and political backgrounds. These differences in modes of thinking are certainly reflected on languages. Reading plays a key part in English language teaching in Chinese high school. In order to improve a learner's reading ability, we can make an attempt at analyzing the differences in Chinese and English thinking modes for their influence on languages. This thesis, from this viewpoint, puts forwards new ways to improve the student's reading abilities. The thesis first discusses the relationship between language and modes of thinking of Chinese people and native English-speaking people in four respects:text structure analysis, text cohesion analysis, sentence analysis, and word collocation. In order to get the students involved in real language environment, all the materials are chosen from NCEE (National College Entrance Examination).First of all, the author make a comparative analysis of different English texts to make the students aware of various discourse patterns and cultivate the ability of monitoring the reading process. Next to that comes the most important part of the thesis---reading strategies based on the understanding of different thinking modes and teaching procedures of two model texts. Besides, to improve the students reading efficiency, a great many sentences and word collocations influenced by English thinking mode are input in reading passage analysis or everyday class. In order to test the effect of the new teaching way on the students, the author conducted an experiment. In the experimental class the author used the English modes of thinking-oriented teaching approach, but in the contrastive class traditional teaching method was used. There is a increasing tendency in the student's reading abilities in terms of the score. Therefore, the new teaching approach is effective and can be used in English reading teaching.
