John Dewey was a famous American philosopher and educator in the 20th century. He constructed his educational theories of Pragmatism from his own special philosophical view, psychological view and social view, which exerted wide and profound influence on America and many other countries in the world. Dewey's educational theories were wide and deep in content. Studying Dewey's educational theories still had a great instructive sense. However, the development of his educational theories was not favoring. They were widely praised, but at the same time they were doubted. This was caused by Dewey's own imperfect educational theories and people's misunderstanding. This paper starts with the social background of formation of Dewey's educational theories, employs methods of document research and comparative analysis, mainly expounds several important propositions in his educational theories, and expatiates monism, the philosophical basis on which Dewey's education was constructed. In addition, this paper also unscrambles the propositions which are easily mistaken by the people, in attempt to make readers know the true theories of Dewey and have rational knowledge of Dewey himself and the essence of his theories. The paper hopes, using this for reference, to explore a new way for education reform suited for our country's situation, and to provide some useful revelations for our universities' education reform, by studying and critically inheriting Dewey's educational theories.
