Objective: During long-term training, taking the open-women rowers trained for 2004 Olympics Games as the subjects, we observed the changes in HB, BU, body composition and managed to find their relationships with the rowing performance. Also we employed the rowing ergometer to appraise the training results timely. Hoping to provide a reference for the improvement on scientific training of rowing. Methods: During the whole training term, we surveyed the indices include HB, BU, body composition, 2000m and 5000m rowing ergo test and incremental ergo rowing regularly. Finding the relationships between HB, BU and training volume according the training programme recorded by the coaches. Making curves of power-lactate,power-HR,PAT4 according to the results of incremental ergo rowing. Results: 1. During the rowing training term, HB concentration changed periodically. HB concentration was related to the training volume (r =-0.61,P<0.001). 2. BU concentration correlated with training volume(r=0.64, P<0.01). 3. There was no significantly change in body mass. The free-fat mass of subjects increased statistically(p<0.05). 4. Correlations were also observed for the FFM and the 2000m and 5000m rowing ergo performances(r=-0.68, P<0.001;r=-0.61, P<0.001). 5. During the training period, power at 4mmol/l blood lactate concentration significantly increased and correlated with 5000m rowing ergo performance(r=-0.90, P<0.01). 6. Performances of 2000m,5000m rowing ergo also increased significantly(p<0.05). Conclusions: 1. The negative correlation for HB concentration and training volume indicated that training volume was an important reason for the decreasing of HB concentration in rowing training.2. BU concentration positively correlated with training volume. It proved BU concentration was more sensitive to rowing training volume. 3. FFM is a valuable physiological determinant of performance.4. The curve of power-lactate,power-HR,PAT4 could be used to access the training results. 5. PAT4 was a determinant of 5000m rowing ergo performance. 6. 2000m and 5000m rowing ergo performances improved significantly and it indicated open-women rowers'physiological ability has reached a high level.
