Cognitive style is an important individual differences variable. Its impact is represented not only in the cognitive process, but also in the psychological characteristics of personality.After the cognitive style theory proposed, many domains have launched the cognitive style applied research, for instance, the influence of cognitive style to learning activity, the relations of cognitive style and individual difference and so on .This experiment unifying the cognitive style and Spatial-cognitive ability in shapes was an attempt to inspect the different cognitive style middle-school students' development characteristic in mental folding ,mental unfolding and mental rotation and meanwhile explored what level of development had the space cognitive capacity achieved in different grades .Through this findings author hoped that can reveal the middle-school student psychology cognition factor to study the geometry , in order to provide the psychological basis to enhance the geometry teaching and the geometry curriculum .The study used mixed experimental design of 3 (three cognitive styles) X 2 (two genders) X 5 (five grades): The subjects of this experiment were 240 high school students from different grades. Embedded Figures Test was used to measure cognitive styles of the samples, based on which field-independent sample group and field-dependent sample groups were selected . The test from Development of Middle Students' Ability to Recognize Spatial Pattern was used to measure spatial-cognitive ability in shapes.This study analyzed about the influence of the students' cognitive styles on their spatial cognitive ability in shapes and indicates that:1) Overall, the middle school students of different cognitive styles are different in their spatial cognitive ability. Field-independent students have the most advantages over other kinds of students in spatial cognitive ability, and field-dependent group has the least.2) During middle school, the gender of students is little related to the cognitive style and the spatial cognitive ability.3) From the perspective of age, with increasing grade, the field independence enhances and spatial cognitive skills gradually increase. The critical period and the transition period of the spatial cognitive capacity are different in different cognitive styles, and so is the growth rate.4) Field independent students in middle school are higher than middle style students and field dependent students in mathematics achievement and in spatial cognitive ability, and field-dependent students are the lowest.
