China School Motto Study

School motto is the content of the moral education for students, and also the guiding principle for students and school, which belongs to the spiritual culture among the school culture. However, college motto is the direct expression and specific embodiment of the college core value, the "soul" of the college culture, which contributes a lot actively to the development of the college.The thesis firstly interprets the essence of the motto and analyzes the text traits of college motto in China. And then it classifies the college mottos. By comparing the Chinese with the western college mottos, it learns that motto is supposed to be the "mirror" of culture and the distinctions between the Chinese and western college mottos, from the aspects of expressing form and value pursuit, accurately reveal the differentiations of traditional Chinese and western culture. It also suggests that the Chinese college motto should both inherit the spirit of traditional culture and embody modern spirit. Finally, on the basis of a questionnaire, the thesis sets forth two functions, namely, promoting the implement of cultural management and improving the college brand, that the Chinese college motto possesses and the three ways, namely, creating excellent motto, carrying out motto education and actualizing the motto requirement, to achieve the functions.
