Reseach on chemical problem solving , which rose in the 1970s , has been developed gradually from problem solving model to the mechanism of problem representation.Problem representation, the most fundamental aspect of chemical problem solving, reveals many psychological operation stages of chemical problem solving and has been paid much attention by many experts at home and abroad. From the perspective of modern cognitive psychology, this research explores the chemical problem representation and strategies, reveals the cognitive pattern of chemical problem solving, and covers whether these students have some preferences for cognitive model in the process of solving chemical problems and whether the preferences have sexual differences or are related to the field dependent cognitive style.Accordingly, this research adopts synthetically several research metheds of cognitive task analysis, psychological test and case interview, etc. The detailed research process are as follows:1. The researcher draws up aaignment paper of chemical application problems, analyzes accordingly the representation style and level of students problems, and adopts Embedded Figures Test to examine students' cognitive style.2. The researcher chooses Grade One students in one high school in Henan Province as the testees and acts as the examiner to carry out the team test.3. According to their performances in solving problems, the researcher divides the students into groups, and interviews the sample students seperately.4. According to the test score of the field dependent cognitive style, the researcher divides the testees into groups. After the analysis of original materials, the data is to be analysed statistically with the help of the software package of SPSS11.0. The results show that: (1) the cases number of every reprsentation changing pattern is evidently different and the case number of category representation is on the low side; (2) the number of cases of every problem solving cognitive pattern is significantly different and most testees adopt the production problem-solving pattern; (3) there is not remarkable different in using cognitive patterns between male students and female students; (4) there is evident correlation between the problem solving patterns and the field dependent cognitive style . (5) there is evident correlation between the problem solving patterns and the result of problem solving. The conclusions can been drawn through the research: (1) the process of chemical problem solving is the alternative development process of representation and its change, and there are different representation levels and styles in different stages of problem solving, and there are intersection, conversion and skipping between the different levels. (2) there are preferences in the distribution of the students' problem solving cognitive models, with the production problem-solving models outweighing the category cognitive models and the blind-cognitive models; (3) there is not remarkable different in using cognitive patterns between male students and female students;(4)there is correlation between the problem solving models and the cognitive styles; (5) the problem solving models affects the result of problem solving.
