As the earliest form of Chinese Islam formal educational and traditional education of Chinese Muslims, mosque education came into being in Ming dynasty and remains today, playing an irreplaceable role in the development of Islam in China. As an important education system in history of Islam and Hui ethnic minority, mosque education has cultivated numerous religious specialists and boosted the development of Islam and the Hui ethnic minorities'culture.Islamic institute education in China originated in 1950s, aiming at cultivating professional talents who love the country, support socialism system, possess rich Islam knowledge and good education background. Over the past fifty years, the modern Islamic institute education in China fostered large quantities of excellent religious talents for Islam of China, accelerating the development of culture of Chinese Islam and Hui ethnic minority.This thesis researches the two religious education forms of Chinese Islam—mosque education and Islamic institute education, analyses their characteristics with perspective and research method of pedagogy, thereby exploring the mode of their interaction to advance Chinese Islam in modern society.Chapter 1 defines the basic elements,mode, functions and objectives of education as well as the basic elements, mode and functions of religious education, which provides theory support for the later research on mosque education and Islamic institute education.Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 introduce the origination and development of mosque education and Islamic institute education in detail based on historical literature, summarize their education goals, education features, education means and education functions. Those chapters suggest that the mosque education is characterized by the clarity of education objectives, diversity of education functions, practicalness of education content and complexity of education environment; and the Islamic institute education is featured by uniqueness of education objectives, complexity of education content, diversity of education environment and variety of education functions.Chapter 4 describes the advantages and disadvantages of mosque education and Islamic institute education in detail and the interaction mode between them in this new era. It also explores the new direction of Chinese Islam education internally and externally to accelerate the development of Islam education of China in modern society.
