Laser triangulation probe is a non-contact displacement measurement device based on laser triangulation method, and it is widely used in industrial inspection for its advantages of high accuracy, high efficiency and being easy to carry. The key factors to enhance its performance are the image acquisition and processing for the laser beam stripe on the surface of object. So it is very important to study the real-time image acquisition, processing and display technology in the entire measuring device.According to the practical necessity, this paper built a simple laser triangulation probe measurement system based on FPGA and studied the contour detection of the cutting workpiece surface. Firstly, on the basis of the principle of laser triangulation, the two-dimensional coordinates of any point on the surface of the object was derived. Secondly, hardware and software platform were designed to accomplish FPGA image acquisition and processing. The images were acquired by the CCD camera. This paper designed a SDRAM controller where the images were stored. The images which had been collected and processed were displayed by VGA. Gigabit ethernet which was based on UDP protocol was designed for image data transmission and the connection with PC. Once again, the collected images were pre-processed and laser stripe center extraction algorithm was implemented in hardware. Finally, the entire measurement system was calibrated for cutting workpiece model measurement and results were analyzed.By comparing the measurement results with the actual size of the workpiece, the device designed in this paper met the anticipated requirements. It had laid a solid foundation for further research in this field.
