People's increasing demand for individualized computer products indicates the coming of the Age of Post PC, in which embedded systems play a very impotant role. Along with the development of micro-electronics technology, embedded systems have evolved greatly in both hardware and software. Network based embedded devices have already come into reality, and they make the most part of information terminal devices these days. The paper introduces the design, implementation and development process of a PDA phone system for telecom maintenance purpose. First introduced is the hardware system that is based on the uCsimm board, followed by an illustration to the uClinux operating system and some device drivers. Then the paper describes the GUI subsystem, including a performance breakthrough made in its porting. Afterwards the design of the data storage subsystem is shown, highlighting the techniques used to ensure correctness of stored data. Finally the communication protocol used in the system, which defines transmission of data across telephone network, is extensively discussed.Through those introductions, the paper summarizes the characteristics of the PDA phone system as a general embedded system, and issues several possible improvements. And the author hope the paper is worth reference in further research on other embedded systems.
