Reconfigurable Computing refers to a technology that the hardware architecture can be customized to meet certain specific applications after the fabrication of digital system. Reconfigurable computing represents an intermediate approach between the extremes of ASIC's efficiency and general-purpose processor's flexibility, promising a valuable alternative to the computing technology.Despite the rapid development of reconfigurable computing technology, the design space is far away from fully exploration especially in the aspect of reconfigurable technology application research. It is obviously falling behind the architecture development.Based on the reconfigurable computing technology, the thesis introduces a reconfigurable computing array model, targeted at multimedia image applications. Then, the work mainly deals with the mapping of some important image processing and video compression algorithms on the reconfigurable computing array. The research work of this thesis mainly includes:1. Study the differences between the reconfigurable computing and traditional computing technology such as general purpose processor, ASIC etc. Analyze RCA, a reconfigurable computing array targeted at multimedia applications in detail.2. Study two of the most important basic operations in digital image processing: 2-D Discrete Fourier Transform and 2-D Discrete Convolution Transform. Map them on RCA.3. Discuss the basic theories of the video compression, study some common video compression standards, analyze the application of its important algorithms on the reconfigurable computing array. Map the most time-wasting algorithms DCT and Full Scan Block Match on RCA, and evaluate the performances.
