The Infrared image enhancement is of great importance in the area of night vision technology. In this dissertation, attention was focused on image enhancement, especially on the image sharpening algorithm. The conflict between edge sharpening and noise increasing with former algorithm was deeply analyzed. Based on VLSI and FPGA techniques, the architecture of infrared image enhancement system and the hardware circuit were also established. After abundant experiment, the former algorithm was improved and the new one was successfully applied in the hardware system. Not only the influence of the non-uniformity in infrared image system was eliminated, but also the problem of image enhancement contradicting with noise accumulation was resolved. In the end, the direction of future research work was also indicated.
