The main purpose of the standard was to improve the compression efficiency and to provide a suitable network transmission interface for the video signal. H.264 has many new characteristics in coding efficiency and adaptability in many kinds of networks and application areas. These new characteristics make H.264 standard save about 50%-70% bit rate with equivalent visual quality compared to the prior standards.Integrating the new technology H.264 with the stable media processor to achieve the high efficient media communication platform is very meaningful. At present, with the high speed development of the Digital Signal Processor (DSP), it provides a fast, stable multimedia signal processing platform to achieve the processing of video and audio signal efficiently. With Ti's high performance DSP TMS320DM642, implementing the H.264 algorithm is valuable in the market and engineering.This dissertation first illustrate the coded data structure, codec principles of H.264, then it describes the key technology of H.264 such as intra prediction, inter prediction, transforming, entropy coding, filtering and so on. It chooses JVT's testing module JM which is the H.264 software codec to analyze its structure and flow. It also shows the testing results of JM when decoding the coded video sequences in Visual C++ and points out the time-consuming module and gives the way to optimize the software decoder in PC platform.
