With the development of multimedia communication, people need video communication as well as audio. The existing method using PC+camera is very complex and slow. The growing performance of DSP and the improvement of video codec technology give the realization base of embedded multimedia system.This paper designs and implements a system realizing the video decoder and display in the platform of TI-DSP (DM642), This system is very small and fast, it could let people communicate fluently in high definition image. This system has great reference value for wide application use.Chapter one describes the development of codec technology, DSP and network.Chapter two introduces the theory of video compression and analysis the H.263 recommendation in details, comparing it with H.261 and MPEG-4.Chapter three compares the difference among various multimedia processors and video D/A chips and then designs the function layout of the system based on DM642, giving the configuration of peripherals.Chapter four discusses the software platform including the code developing environment, the step of software design and the assembler & compiler tools.Chapter five presents the software framework, including the operation system, the code optimizing method and the device driver.Chapter six gives the test of the whole system about function, performance and reliability.Chapter seven summarizes the system and gives it's meaning in general aspects.
