Along with the rapid development of container transportation and good-sized container vessel, the ports enterprise now days are facing more and more pressure from competition and improving their management. It is the main concern for the port to reduce the cost and enhance the efficiency of stevedoring. Meanwhile the managers of port enterprise also gradually recognize after selecting the basic technique of stevedoring, the reasonable configuration of handling equipments is very critical for increase the efficiency and thereby reduce the operation cost. Therefore it is quite necessary and urgent for strengthen the investigation of how to optimize the configuration of port stevedoring equipment. Via the reasonable configuration of stevedoring equipment, the container terminal can achieve the maximum output by most efficient investment, thereby increasing its compositive competition capacity.Base on the container terminals of Xiamen Port, the paper first introduce the equipment and technic of container stevedoring, focus on the comparison of characteristics and application of different technics. Take Xiamen port as example, the paper introduce further the usage and management of various container handling equipments, and analyse the operation capacity and running cost of container handling equipment via the statistic data. Afterward, integrate with the analyse of equipment selecting, lead in the compositive cost model of container terminal after introducing the factors which effect the configuration of port stevedoring equipment, apply this model on calculation & analysis of container handling equipments configuration on Haitian container terminal of Xiamen Port, and therefore try to help the management understand better the relation between configuration of operation equipments and operation cost, finally draw applicable measure according to the result of investigation.If the quantity of port handling equipment is too many, it will definitely increase the required capital for port construction. The waste caused by long idle time and low utilization of port equipment will also decrease the profit ofport enterprise. Contrarily, if the quantity of port handling equipment is less, the vessel will line up and their waiting time in the berth will be prolonged, this will result in damaging the benefit of shipper and consignee, consequently also damage the reputation of port enterprise, which finally weakening the competitiveness of port enterprise. Therefore the configuration of port handling equipment should consider the benefits of both port and shipper, to value the investment most by "fulfil the need, while without waste". This is the core ofcompositive cost model expatiate in this paper."Proceed in proper sequence", the investment process of port handling equipment is dynamic; the scale of it should fulfil the requirement of the ports operation work load. "Adjust measures to local conditions", to optimize the configuration of equipment while reduce the running cost, improve the utilization of port handling equipment via rational and scientific management is an efficient method.
