As a new kind of magnesium hydroxide flame retardant, with the promise of high, thermal stability decomposition temperatures high and smoke suppression characteristics, non-toxic, at home and abroad are wide attention, in recent years become a hot research direction. There are abundant magnetite resources, but mostly production low value-added industrial products, resource utilization rate is low.This paper briefly introduces the inorganic flame retardants nano magnesium hydroxide properties, application and the domestic and foreign production consumption status. Nano magnesium hydroxide is discussed emphatically the preparation methods and surface modifier in the application of nanometer materials. By calcining magnesite, removing impurity, acid solution, preparation, and by using the magnesium chloride solution, using the precipitation agent ammonia liquid as a nano magnesium hydroxide precipitation preparation. The papers on liquid precipitation preparing nanometer technology conditions of magnesium hydroxide are studied by orthogonal experiment, respectively, single factor experiment, the nano magnesium hydroxide determined the best conditions for preparation process: Ethanol than with the volume of water for 2:1,90min reaction time, reaction temperature 80℃, Initial concentration of magnesium chloride 0.5 mol/L, the drying temperature for 80℃, vacuum around 0.08 Mpa, drying time 2 hours.On the experimental study of nano magnesium hydroxide surface modification, by silane coupling agent as surface modifier, obtains the best modification conditions for:Through the ultrasonic oscillations scattered magnesium hydroxide solution, add magnesium hydroxide powder quality 5% of silane coupling agent KH570, maintain modification time for 60min, modification temperature of 40℃.Using the LS-900 laser particle size analyzer, scanning electron microscope magnesium hydroxide was characterized by IR spectrum analyzer, of silane coupling agent of the modified magnesium hydroxide analysis, to decide its modification mechanism. The results are as follows:Nano magnesium hydroxide through silane coupling agent, nano magnesium hydroxide modified surface combines nonpolar organic functional group, the surface by hydrophilic into hydrophobicity, the reunion of modified particle greatly between phenomenon. Narrow diameter distribution, good dispersion, and average particle size for 60nm. This method is simple and easy to operate, process laid the conditions for industrial production.
