In this article, four rare earth elements—La, Y, Nd and Gd are added into MB8 wrought magnesium alloy. Whether mechanical properties and corrosion resistance etc. of MB8 magnesium alloy can be improved by refining the grain is studied. Cast and extrusion alloy microstructure is analyzed by the optical microscopy, XRD diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). What's more, mechanical properties of cast and extruded magnesium alloy are tested with a universal tensile testing machine and Brinell hardness tester. Additionally, corrosion resistance of the alloy is investigated with uniform corrosion method of laboratory immersion. When the four rare earth elements are added to the MB 8 magnesium alloy, the cast and extrusion alloy grain is refined, the mechanical properties are improved and corrosion resistance is also increased. Especially when Nd is added into MB8 magnesium alloy, the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance are improved greatly. The strength of extension of MB8+1%Nd extrusion magnesium alloy reaches 313.26MPa, the extension is 16.21%,Bush hardness is 63.69HB and the rate of corrosion is 0.026 mm/a.
