The chloromethylation reaction of arene is one of the most important organicsynthetic reactions. As the chloromethyl functional group can be easily converted intodifferent groups, and thus produce many useful derivates, this reaction is widely usedin medical, chemical, material, liquid crystall areas, revealing a prospect of increasingimportance in application. This paper focuses mainly on the chloromethylation reaction of biphenyl: Tooptimize the synthetic technology of 4,4'-bis(chlorlmethyl) biphenyl; To study thesynthetic conditions of 4-chloromethyl biphenyl and develop an efficient method topurify it. Based on the fact that the chloromethyl functional group is active, attemptsare made to use this material to synthesize many compounds successfully.Since the beginning of industrial production of 4,4'-bis(chlorlmethyl) biphenyl, the problems of low yield and low purity have existed. To solve these problems, wemake lots of researches on synthetic conditions, so a convenient, highly efficientsynthetic method is explored to conquer these problems successfully, and catalyst isefficiently recycled. After the technology is optimized, not only the rate of reusedmaterial is promoted, but also the environmental pollution brought by dealing withwaste lye decreases.4-chloromethyl biphenyl is an efficient medical composition in biology. Manycompound derivates from it have various important purposes, but its synthetic processis difficult to control and high purity compound can't be obtained easily. Besides, there have been limited reports about how to synthesize this compound. This papercreates a new catalyst that composes organic acid and inorganic acid in perfectproportion to produce a higher purity product, which still fails to meet the demand inmarket. If recrystallization is used, the production will be greatly decreased. Thispaper explores an effective method of purifying to ultimately obtain the high puritycompound by converting functional groups. This method can be used in many otherarene derivates and applied considerably in industrial production.Because chloromethyl is a kind of active functional group, it can be converted tomany other normal functional groups, such as -CH2OH, -CHO, -CH2NH2, -CH2R,-COOH, -CH2OR and so on. This paper synthesizes several derivates by converting4-chloromethyl biphenyl, such as 4-biphenyl aldehyde, 4-hydroxymethyl biphenyl,4-phenyl benzyl acetate, 4-methoxymethyl biphenyl, and 4-cyano biphenyl, thesecompounds are characterized by NMR.
