Submerged arc welding is widely used in ships, boilers, cranes and other heavy plate welding manufactures because of its high productivity welding, high quality welding seams, low cost welding and several other advantages. In order to increase productivity, reduce labor intensity, improve the working conditions and get good welding seams, it need to strengthen the study on automation of the production process of the submerged arc welding. Arc sensor was applied to submerged arc welding in this article, and the Magnetic-controlled sway arc seam tracking system for submerged arc welding was developed.Arc kinematics of Magnetic-controlled sway arc seam tracking system was researched and a model of Magnetron swinging arc was established. According to the model the dynamic state and the steady state of the arc under the action of magnetic control arc sensor were analyzed, the mechanical analysis of arc was carried out in both microscopic and macroscopic. According to the mechanical analysis, the arc kinematics under the transverse alternating magnetic field was described it in math, which supplied a theoretical basis for the research of magnetic-controlled sway arc seam tracking system for submerged arc welding.The pool width of the Magnetic-controlled arc seam tracking system for submerged arc welding was researched. Based on the magnetic control arc sensor model, the arc pole area of arc was assumed as a cylinder and the diameter of the under end of the cylinder is approximately equal to the pool width when the arc wasn't swing. Magnetron arc sensor pool width model and welding parameters pool width model based on the Magnetic-controlled arc seam tracking system for submerged arc welding were established respectively, and simulation analysis of magnetron arc sensor parameters and welding parameters on the pool width model was also carried out, so as to analyze the influence laws of the arc sensor parameters and welding parameters on the pool width.The advantages and disadvantages of the old-fashioned magnetron arc sensor and the shielded welding magnetron arc sensor were compared, reasonable design was put forward based on the actual requirements of submerged arc tracking, and a new type of magnetic control arc sensor of submerged arc welding was designed, which supplied an experimental basis to study the Magnetic-controlled sway arc seam tracking system for submerged arc welding. An experimental system which includes magnetic control arc sensor, submerged arc welding, weld automatic tracking control platform and digital oscillograph was established for the subsequent experiment and research.Experimental study of arc kinematics analysis and the pool width modeling was carried out. The welding current waveform which was measured by the Hall sensor was researched, demonstrated the control action of magnetron arc sensor. Research the change rule of arc movement behavior under the magnetic field, validated the correction of analysis by using magnetron arc sensor model. The pool width values of each weld seams were measured to establish graphs of weld width, and compared with the graphs obtained by modeling simulation, validated the correction of modeling simulation. The influence laws of the arc sensor parameters on the pool width and welding parameters on the pool width under the magnetic field were also researched.
