In this thesis, two new types of carbazole-based photorefractive (PR) monomers containing norbornene functional groups lingked through a long flexible alkylene chain were designed and synthesized. Then, corresponding functionalized PR polymers were synthesized by the ring-openning metathesis polymerization (ROMP) using the Grubbs 1st or the Grubbs 2nd generation catalysts. The obtained PR monomers were confirmed by 1H-NMR and all the polymers were characterized by the measurement of IR, UV-Vis, GPC, DSC and TG etc.In the first part, a carbazole-based PR monomer with a norbornene functional group and a methine chromophore was designed and synthesized by the reaction of 5-norbornene-2-carboxyacyl chloride with a carbazole-based methine chromophore, and a long flexible alkylene chain was introduced aiming to impart the obtained polymer with a lower glass transition temperature (Tg). Then the polymer was synthesized by ROMP using the Grubbs 2nd generation catalyst. The obtained polymer was characterized by IR, UV-vis and GPC. Results showed that the polymer has aλmax at 410 nm and a number average molecular weight (Mn) of 5.4×104.Based on the success of the above works, another carbazole-based PR monomer with a norbornene functional group and an azobenzene chromophore was designed and synthesized in the second part of the thesis. Polymers P2 and P2' were obtained via the catalysis of the Grubbs 1st and the Grubbs 2nd generation catalysts, respectively. Results suggested that the polymers have a Mn higher than 1.O×1O4. Their glass transition temperatures are 75℃and 43℃, respectively. In the last part, a comparative study was conducted for the catalytic behaviors of the Grubbs 1st and the Grubbs 2nd generation catalysts. The latter has a higher catalytic activity than the former, while its initiator efficiency is lower. Thus, the obtained polymers via the Grubbs 2nd generation catalyst generally have a wider molecular weight distribution.
