The assembly lines have the important position and role in the current mass production. In view of the present situations of assembly line, according to the characteristics of the stochastic assembly line, this paper makes researches on the randomness of the work elements'operation time which is based on the analysis of the existing assembly line balancing methods. Firstly, the operation time is converted into defined time. Then, a mathematical model is established. Finally, we define a corresponding balance method and apply it to the two-sided assembly line.Due to the limitation of the dimensions, many enterprises have turned to use two-sided assembly line, especially in large-sized product assembly processes. The two-sided assembly lines have many advantages. For example, it can shorten the length of the assembly line. At the same time, it also can increate the efficiency of workers and fixtures etc. However, the traditional simple assembly line balancing method is no longer applicable to solving the balance problems because of the particularity of its structure, namely the restriction of each element operation directions and operating constraints of the sequence of operations. So in this paper, we put forward a suitable balancing method for the two-sided assembly lines based on the existing balancing theory.First of all, in order to solve the large-scale product assembly balancing problem, a corresponding mathematical model is established according to the characteristics of stochastic two-sided assembly line. This paper proposes a heuristic method for two-sided assembly line which is fully considered the relations and constraints of the operational direction, and the sequence of tasks, operating time between the mutual stations. Then, the assignment distribution orders and directions are determined by analyzing the operation times and operational directions. The algorithm proposed can not only make the balance of the assembly line come true effectively, but also makes the stochastic two-sided assembly line balancing problem solved with mathematical method possible.Secondly, the paper also brings forth a genetic algorithm to solve the stochastic two-sided assembly line balancing problem. The structure of the two-sided assembly line is more complex than the one-side assembly line. In this algorithm, a sequenced-based, combined coding scheme was adopted, combined with the new corresponding crossover and mutation operations. Then, we can prove that this algorithm has a better searching efficiency though examples.Finally, this paper takes the assembly line of a loader as an example. A simulation model is established with eM-Plant to verify the practicality and effectiveness of these algorithms written above. We can see that the length of the assembly line is shorten, at the same time, the production and utilization are promoted, the costs of products are also reduced. All of these have a great effect on economic benefits.
