Paprika red extracted from red pepper is a kind of natural pigments. It is acknowledged as the best red pigment in the world with its color intensity 10 times more than other pigments, and widely used in food, medicine, cosmetics and other industries. As paprika is rich in China and has a wide range of varieties, extraction and separation of paprika red have a bright prospect. In chapter 1, the state-of-art review of paprika red was given, including its application, analysis, extraction and refining process. The research contents of the thesis were proposed. In chapter 2, the leaching of paprika red from red pepper was studied using color and R/Y as indexes. The main factors influencing the leaching process were investigated, including the leaching solvent, temperature, granularity, the ratio of the leaching solvent to paprika powder and leaching time. The optimal leaching conditions were given. In chapter 3, the refining conditions of paprika red from the crude leaching product were studied using the batch solvent extraction. In order to optimize the batch extraction process, the suitable extractant was chosen and the effects of ethanol concentration, ratio of solvent volume to feed volume and extraction times on the product color and purity of capsaicinoides were investigated, respectively. In chapter 4, the main factors influencing the column chromatography of paprika red were studied, including solvent, packing height of silica, activation time and silica gel.In chapter 5, the solvents from liquid-liquid extraction were recovered based on the rules of circular economy. The compositions of the solvents were measured using GC, and were used as those of feed streams in the simulation. Aspen plus was applied to simulate the recovery process, and the suitable recovery conditions were obtained. In chapter 6, a pilot process was proposed with a capacity of 2kg paprika according to the results of lab experiment. The streams and the sizes of equipment were determined, and the flow chart of the pilot process was given using AutoCAD.In chapter 7, the conclusion and discussions of this thesis were given.
