Vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) because of its advantages of high density, high transfer rate parallel optical transmission, can be mass production, low cost, makes it widely used in optical interconnection, parallel optical information processing and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical communications and other fields. Cap-sealing is very important to the production of VCSEL laser, which have a great impact on the air-tightness and mechanical properties of the products, hereby affecting the quality and reliability. Nowadays, the cap-sealing machine of our country is huge in shape and most of them have relatively backward control system. Therefore the development of a digital control, closure of small cap machine has great practical significance.The main work of this project is to develop a small cap-sealing machine which can meet the requirements of the TO(Transistor Outline) packages of 1mm-10mm vertical cavity surface emitting laser. This cap-sealing machine use 51 microcontroller as its central process unit and based on the principle of capacitor discharge welding, matched with the corresponding control circuit and mechanical parts, vacuum parts and nitrogen tanks to form a complete seal cap system. This machine can meet the needs of actual production, which can meet the requirements of smaller and digital.The design and research process of cap-sealing machine involves materials, machinery, electronics, controlling and process research. The design of cap-sealing machine include outline and structural design, hardware design, system software design and so on, which can further divided into many small modules include welding structural design, mechanical movement design, nitrogen gas tank shape design, circuit design, software design and air system design. Each module was very well designed and can work together. It has many advantages such as a full digital control system,simple operation and charge and discharge very stable. In addition, some tests of VCESL laser cap-sealing process were taken to get the optimal parameters of process parameters of cap-sealing machine. Qualitative analysis was used to identify the cap-sealing quality under different parameters. Optimal parameters were found out which is useful for the actual production staff.
