In this study, we systematically evaluate the structure and warning information of crayon packaging in respect to convenience and safety. There are two studies, including four experimental studies. In Study 1, through Experiment 1, we first compared the convenience level of different packages and found some usability problems, according to which we improved the structure of the poorest package. The effectiveness of the improvement was verified by Experiment 2. Of the above, we put forward some design principles of crayon packaging structures. With Study 1, we evaluated the validity and concluded some design principles of crayon packages'warning information with the same logic. The results draw the following conclusions:(1) The experiment can effectively evaluate the level of convenience of the packaging operation. The swing-wing packages, No.1 and No.5, having less operating availability. Such packaging is unfit for a product whose packaging is re-use, such as crayons.(2) We found that there are 7 problems on crayon packaging: there are open-operation problems, open-tips problems, tray problems, anti-leakage problems, hanging board problems, window problems and English-use problems.(3) The experiment did effectively evaluate the level of warning information. In respect to the attention of warning information, Package 4 is the best one, Package 1, Package 2 and Package 5 are poorer. In respect to intelligibility of the alert icon, Icon b is the best, Icon e the worst.(4) We found that there are 8 problems on warning information; they are size, highlights, independent display, alert level, graphic display, information quantity, placement, and intelligibility. Five problems of the warning icon exists. They are too abstract or too ambiguous problems, language usage problems, the abuse of English, warning level problems, and standardization problems.(5) Based on the above experiments, we summed up the following six crayon packaging design principles: simple principle, less barrier principle, tray principle, anti-leakage principle, large window principle and highlighting information principle. And four warning information design principles: independent display principle, highlighting principle, warning-tips principle and "graphic with interpretation" principle.
